The 33-year-old male was arrested by the Hawks in Braamfotein, Johannesburg after an off-duty cop Terrence Kutullo Makgatho was gunned down and killed in Lebowakgomo area. A bronze Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI was seen traveling with the assailants earlier on Saturday.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Matimba Maluleke, confirmed to have done a thorough investigation that led the officers to track down the vehicle in Johannesburg. They followed the car and managed to bust the driver along with other two occupants in Braamfotein.
“The driver of the vehicle was suspected to be the same person that killed the cop in Lebowakgomo and placed under arrest,” Maluleke said.
Investigations have further led the police to the suspect’s residence at Rooihuiskrool in Centurion. Upon arriving at the house, a search was conducted and they found a firearm that may be linked to the murder. A large amount of money and a cellphone were also found in the suspect’s car.
Maluleke added that the investigation team is on the verge of establishing if the suspect could be implicated in other crimes.
He is expected to make his first court appearance in Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He faces charges of murder and possession of an illegal firearm.
