Mask Off by Basethane Ledwaba
Basethane Ledwaba (26) was born in Mokopane, Limpopo province. He was raised in Ga-Mashashane, Moshate village. He is a qualified licensed cabin crew member and resides in Johannesburg, Kempton Park.
Mask Off is a true reflection on the strength it takes to make sense of life after a loss of a loved one. In the book(Mask Off), Basethane attests to the hardships of life after his maternal grandmother’s death and how he had to find new ways of coping through drawing on many lessons, ones that were instilled through his grandmother’s tough love. He describes his grandmother as someone who never spared the rod to spoil the child.
Malcolm X is his biggest inspiration and the quote “by any means necessary” is every trick in the book for him.
INSPIRED CHOICE
I read many books for as long as I can remember. It is worth pointing out that I started reading at a young age well into my teens. The habit was just an instructive beginning for me up to that point until recently. One novel I greatly drew inspiration from reading was “Born A Crime” by Trevor Noah. His childhood was bittersweet, cheerful, exciting, long, and hard. Along the way, certain convictions were formed and fixed in him becoming a man. What he stood for then and thereafter, relates to the way I view my own life as well. He is one and the last of his own kind.
