Justice for Shongile Nkwashu

Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba welcomes the sentence meted out by the Limpopo High Court Judge President Ephraim Mokgoba on Tuesday 15 September 2020.

Ntiyiso Xilumani (26) was accused of killing his girlfriend Dr Shongile Pretty Nkhwashu(25) in January this year.

The matter was briefly heard at Mankweng Magistrate Court and was later referred to Limpopo High Court for trial. The trial only took two days before judgment was handed down by Judge President. Xilumani pleaded guilty for the murder on the first day of the trial.

After a presentation by both councils, Judge President Ephraim Makgoba handed down the judgment. The Judge sentenced Ntiyiso Xilumani to life imprisonment.

"We welcome the life imprisonment sentence handed down today by the high court. Indeed this will send a clear message to all the men out there who still think that they can continue to abuse, kill, and rape our women and children and walk free. Dr Shongile was also our daughter as a department whom together with her family was still expecting a lot from her. We are happy that justice has prevailed today and the fight against Gender-Based Violence has received a boost after this judgment" said MEC Ramathuba.
