How to Apply for UIF Employment Benefits

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) allocates short-term financial assistance to workers whose income is extremely low or no longer active. The trust also offers assistance to those who are unable to work due to illness, maternity or adoption leave.

When applying for benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund ( UIF), candidates are advised to submit their applications at the Department of Employment and Labour Centres or use an online option. Nevertheless, this can also be one impossible task as many people do not have access to the resources to access UIF’s benefits.

With a rapid increase of an unemployment rate in South Africa, more people will seek financial support from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). It is also important to note that your credits settle the benefits you qualify for. For every four days you work, the UIF credit system ensures that you receive a credit for every single day. The UIF credits can extend to a limit of 365 credits. The total number of credits you have will confirm as many benefits as you can possibly claim. The benefits are eligible for you if you contributed to the UIF while still employed. However, if you have resigned, been suspended or fired from work, you are not allowed to make any claim to the UIF benefits. Unless otherwise, you can claim if the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) approves the resignation as an unfair dismissal.

Here are the steps when applying for UIF employment benefits in person:

Go and visit your nearest labour centre and get to the Unemployment Register. You will be permitted to sign the Unemployment Register every four weeks, provided that you are still unemployed. A white card will be given to you. Each time you sign the register, the white card will therefore be signed. You will start receiving money from the UIF in eight weeks time once you have registered for unemployment benefits. However, the unemployment benefits will be allocated to you if your information on the Unemployment Register is correct. You are welcome to visit the labour centre if you received no money long after eight weeks.
