Stigma And Discrimination Against Those Living With HIV

On a recent trend on social media that makes fun of people living with HIV with a hashtag #Geu, one of the socialisers commented that "people are busy galavanting, when they are sick, they become amazed and expect us to play blind" and I say, this is bullying.

It may seem to one occasionally to take a jab with people living with HIV because perhaps their narrow-mindedness tells them that they'll never be infected by HIV but the reality is, no one really goes into the store and buys HIV.

If you not HIV, then someone in your circle has it.

HIV is Human Immuno Deficiency Virus that most people think you'll only get infected by sexual intercourse. What 50% of people seem not to know is that some people were born with it and were consuming medication all their lives whilst other many people get infected because of ill activities happening in our everyday lives such as sexual abuses, not using gloves when treating a bleeding person, sharing razors, etc.

HIV can be manageable but billions of South Africans live in denial of their status because of the stigma attached with being HIV positive, until their immune systems are weak and chances of dying are on a rise.

"It is not usually easy to accept and acknowledge your status. I've seen a lot of people having mental disturbance, people that give up on their lives immediately after learning their status," said Dr Mitchell Manamela.

Why is it okay to bully people who are sick according to you, discriminate against them, or judge them?

As it stands daily, a lot of people still struggle to disclose to their loved ones and the people on social, currently are not making people living with HIV any easy to accept the condition.
