Eskom Bursaries and Scholarships

Eskom, Africa’s biggest manufacturer of electricity, is giving away different types of bursary schemes to South African citizens who are also aiming to develop skills and get education at well established higher education institutions. The bursary schemes that Eskom are offering are designed to assist in educating/ training aspiring candidates.

Eskom aims to help and educate South African people in the interest of social securities such as empowerment and making a good living. Those who are adamant to get trained and educated, but are having financial strains, should grab this opportunity by both hands.

What makes Eskom’s bursary scheme different from the rest of the other bursary schemes, is that bursaries are applicable everywhere in universities, technikons and Further Education and Training (FETs). Below is a complete list of various fields to study for candidates.

Candidates who also wish to apply should meet the correct requirements and be considered for any of the three Eskom bursaries that are available:

NB: Bursaries are only restricted for undergraduate studies, and not postgraduate studies.

Requirements for Application

  • Must hold National Senior Certificate or equivalent.
  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid ID number.
  • Must have a written proof of acceptance for admission by an accredited South African higher education institution (for full-time studies).
  • For requirements and to study at a university, candidates should select Mathematics, Physical Science and English at school; the lowest grades obtained in all the three subjects should either be C(HG) in the old symbol system or a 5 in the new symbol system.
  • To study at a technikon/ University of Technology, candidates must obtain a minimum grade of D (HG)/ C (SG) in the old symbol for all three subjects.
  • Studying at a FET, candidates are also advised to obtain a minimum grade of E(HG) / D (SG) in the old symbol system or a 4 in the new symbol system in all the three subjects.

Full Eskom Bursary

This bursary is mainly focused on serving the interests of Eskom as a business, it is given to the deserving students with an academic record worthy of the bursary. After completion of their studies, successful candidates will honour a work-back settlement, meaning that they will be employed at Eskom to work for the same duration of time as they have been benefiting from the bursary.

Eskom Scholarship

The scholarship is provided for the children/dependents of employees who are currently working at Eskom. If the candidate is worthy of earning the bursary, and his/her parent or guardian has been an employee at Eskom for at least five years, then he/she could qualify.

Eskom Merit Bursary

Of all the three Eskom bursaries available, this is one bursary that caters for academic deserving students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, having financial struggles or those who have disability or even those who are part of Eskom initiative programmes. No work-back settlement is offered after completion of studies with this bursary.

The scholarship covers the following:

Selection Process

Applications that are short-listed will be communicated to through telephone and in writing by mid-August. Candidates will have to honour the invitation to attend an interview which will take place between August and October. A medical report or examination will also include candidates who are awarded the bursary based on a successful interview, sufficient academic record and how they passed the medical fitness test.

Successful candidates will be contacted via telephone or by email in the months of October and December, and will receive forms and a drawn-up contract to complete and sign, and also to be returned to Eskom.

Important Information

Candidates may not receive any other grant for allowance without proof of a written note from Eskom.

Bursary Length

A bursary for a university or FET extends to a period of five years where bridging is applicable. At technikons, bursaries are permitted for a maximum of five years.

In cases of failure

The bursary will only be cancelled if the student fails the first academic year. Moreover if the student passes the first year but fails the second academic year going forward, the bursary will be reinstated. If the student fails again after suspension, the bursary will be cancelled. In the process of cancellation, the bursary must be paid back; full value plus compound interest at a prime rate.

How to Apply

All the application forms of bursaries from Eskom, must be submitted to Eskom by July for the following academic year.
