However 19 of the injured passengers are students confirmed by the UJ preliminary investigations. Three students were rushed to the hospital, while 16 others were treated for the minor injuries they sustained from the crash.
UJ’s Herman Esterhuizen said that the institution is devastated after learning the news of their students who were injured in the crash.
“Our thoughts are with the affected students and their families. The University will do everything it can to ensure that the students receive the necessary medical care and counselling. The university takes the safety and well-being of its students seriously, and the university will work closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the accident,” he said.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla has said that a case of reckless and negligent driving would be opened at the police station.
